The Bluebell Railway is delighted to welcome back the Diesel Gala for 2026!
Celebrating another fantastic weekend dedicated to heritage diesel traction in all its forms.
Building on the success of the past two years, the gala will showcase a varied line-up of visiting and home-fleet locomotives, intensive timetables, and the unmistakable sights and sounds of classic diesel power in action.
Visitors can expect a busy programme featuring multiple locomotives operating across the line, rare pairings, demonstration freight services, and the opportunity to travel behind locomotives representing different eras of British diesel development. Previous galas have drawn enthusiasts and families alike, combining authentic railway operation with a welcoming and vibrant atmosphere across the railway.
Whether you’re a long-time diesel enthusiast or simply keen to experience a different side of heritage railway operation, the 2026 Diesel Gala promises a memorable celebration of these hardworking and characterful machines.
Alongside the 2026 Diesel Gala, the Bluebell Railway is delighted to be working in association with NSE Friends to celebrate 40 years of Network SouthEast (NSE). The centre of these celebrations will be Horsted Keynes, which will act as the main hub for displays, exhibits, and themed activities throughout the gala weekend.
Launched in 1986, Network SouthEast brought a bold and recognisable identity to commuter and regional rail services across London and the South East. Its distinctive red, white and blue livery quickly became iconic, representing a period of modernisation, investment, and renewed pride in railway travel. NSE services operated extensively across Sussex and the wider South East region, forming a vital part of everyday life for commuters, holidaymakers, and rail enthusiasts alike. Many visitors to the Bluebell Railway will have fond memories of travelling on NSE services, making this anniversary particularly meaningful for the local area and surrounding communities.
Working closely with NSE Friends, we are excited to help showcase and celebrate this vibrant era of railway history. Plans are underway to feature themed displays, historical interpretation, and elements designed to highlight the impact and legacy of Network SouthEast within the region. Horsted Keynes, with its period charm and versatility, provides the perfect setting to bring this era back to life during the gala.
Further details about what visitors can expect, special features being planned, and what to look out for across the weekend will be announced in due course.
If you, your group, or your organisation would like to participate, display artefacts, or showcase anything relating to Network SouthEast, we would be very pleased to hear from you and welcome your involvement in helping make this anniversary celebration truly special.
