Tracing the tracks from Lewes to East Grinstead

Nestled in the heart of Southern England, the Bluebell Railway Museum offers a captivating glimpse into the history of the Lewes to East Grinstead Railway line. Opened on June 23, 2011, by Lord Faulkner of Worcester, president of the Heritage Railway Association, the museum showcases a rich tapestry of railway heritage that shaped the region. Through detailed exhibits and engaging stories, visitors can explore the pivotal moments and technological advancements that have defined railway travel in Southern England.

The history of the railway

The story of the Bluebell Railway began in 1882 as the Lewes and East Grinstead Railway (LEGR), quickly becoming part of the London, Brighton & South Coast Railway (LBSCR) a year later. The museum captures this transition and further explores the progression from horse-drawn railways of the 1600s through to the era of steam locomotives and modern electric trains.
